Queen Victoria Pennies 1895–1901: The Final Coins of the Victorian Era

The 1895–1901 Queen Victoria Penny Collection is more than a group of seven old British coins. Together, these pennies form a small timeline of the final years of the Victorian era.

Each penny features Queen Victoria’s Old Head, also known as the Veiled Head. Designed by Thomas Brock, this was Victoria’s final coinage portrait and remained in use until her death in 1901. 

1895–1901: Seven Years of History

During the years represented by these coins, Britain was approaching the end of Queen Victoria’s exceptionally long reign.

1897 was especially important. Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years on the throne. The celebrations included a major royal procession through London and became one of the earliest major royal events captured on film. 

By 1900, Britain had entered a new century while Victoria was still Queen, making these late Victorian pennies witnesses to the transition from the 19th to the 20th century.

Then, on 22 January 1901, Queen Victoria died after a reign of almost 64 years. Her son became King Edward VII, bringing the Victorian era to an end.
